Personal and Professional Background
From an early age, design felt natural to me. Growing up, my grandmother—an avid gardener and creative soul—crafted beauty in everything around her. The love she poured into her home inspired me deeply, instilling an early understanding of how physical surroundings impact our mood and mindset. My father, too, contributed to this journey, sharing his love for drawing and building. Those early days had me rearranging furniture in my room and daydreaming about the perfect spaces. It was no surprise that I pursued a major in Interior Design at LSU, where I found myself surrounded by a community of like-minded creatives. From that moment, I knew design was my calling.
Inspiration and Mentorship
While I can’t pinpoint a single source of inspiration for my career, I would credit my grandmother for teaching me the importance of crafting spaces that foster comfort and joy. And I’ve had a few incredible mentors along the way: Susannah, a powerhouse broker, reminded me that I’m strong enough to hold my own in any environment, even one dominated by men. Carol, a successful interior designer and business owner, taught me not to take myself too seriously—emphasizing balance, kindness to oneself, and the importance of savoring chocolate after lunch.
Design Philosophy and Process
If I had to sum up my design philosophy in a word, it would be fluid. I gravitate toward a modern organic style with a hint of art deco, always prioritizing function. Every choice has a purpose, and every design element serves a function. I wish I could share the details of my design process, but, as they say, that’s an ancient Chinese secret!
Sources of Inspiration and Design Trends
Much of my inspiration comes from nature and immersing myself in different cultures. Whether hiking through forests or wandering city streets, I’m constantly reminded of the balance and harmony that can exist between natural and human-made environments. In design trends, I’m particularly drawn to surrealism and the minimalistic aesthetic of a Tesla interior—it’s fascinating how the intentional absence of detail can be just as powerful as ornate embellishments. To stay updated in this evolving industry, I rely on magazines, podcasts, and especially travel. There’s no substitute for physically experiencing different spaces and cultures.
Challenges and Solutions
One of my most challenging projects involved working with a virtual client and relying solely on photos and videos. Without being in the space, the distortion of colors, scale, and light made it difficult to visualize the design. To bridge the gap, I worked closely with the client, guiding them through taking extra photos, videos, and precise measurements. With patience and teamwork, we overcame these challenges, and the result was worth every hurdle.
The Joys and Misconceptions of Design
One common misconception is that decorating is synonymous with designing. In reality, design encompasses so much more—it’s about crafting an experience that aligns with how clients want to feel in their spaces. My favorite project was for a recently widowed woman who wanted to transform her home into something she had only dreamed of. Her late husband preferred traditional decor, but she longed for a sleek, contemporary aesthetic. Helping her create a new space allowed her to heal, and witnessing her emotional transformation was deeply rewarding.
Personal Touch and Hobbies
Outside of design, I love traveling, particularly discovering new restaurants and exploring international destinations. I find peace in meditating, yin yoga, and unwinding in a hot sauna. My downtime often involves a relaxing bath or curling up with a documentary, usually with my two ginger cats, Jennifer and Faye Faye.
If I Could Redesign Anything...
If given the chance, I would redesign public schools. From the layout to the furniture, our schools deserve spaces that nurture learning and comfort. I struggled in traditional classrooms as a child with ADHD, and I believe that more adaptable, welcoming environments could make a huge difference for today’s students.
The Future of Design
The future of design is anyone’s guess, especially with advancements in AI. I’m hopeful we’ll see a return to the appreciation of craftsmanship and detail. The prevalence of mass production has, in many ways, overshadowed the artistry of high-quality design. My hope is that the industry finds a balance, allowing us to enjoy thoughtfully crafted, meaningful products that add beauty and value to our lives.
